you gotta work with what you got…

i’ve thought a lot about my last post and wondered how i ended up here. my best friend told me that few people could decide to {poof!} make all those changes at once and that i should, instead, pick one and then the rest would follow. so. i’ve decided to change my eating habits with a 10 day challenge from the self health revolution.

i know, i know…is this just another empty promise? who knows! but i’m going to try my darndest – i mean, 10 days should fly by, right? and given the fact that i work at whole foods, how hard can it be? that was really the sprout (haha) of this solution – i can’t change everything at once, so the best i can do is change what is within my reach. instead of longing for faraway goals, like the farm; i need to focus closer: my health, trying to find some balance, making time for joy…oh wait, the list is already getting long!

the way i figure it, if i’m eating better, i will have more energy. if i have more energy, i will get back to my punch bag. if i get back to my punch bag, i won’t be so stressed out. if i’m not so stressed out, i will have more mental space to be creative. makes total sense, no?

you would already be proud of me…we do something at whole foods that we call “team member appreciation”. the week is full of yummy free food and activities – yesterday was pizza day – but i was quite content with my organic salad (with sprouts, edamame and flax seeds)…go me!

i do have to say that just this shift in starting something doable completely changed my energy level. i walked a little straighter and with more purpose. my mind raced with dishes i could prepare to stay on track. sorry i missed my meatless monday post, but the next 10 days will probably be filled with salads and smoothies! makes for healthy eating, but maybe not the most engaging reading.

maybe i’ll just start a food journal to document my 10 day challenge…

monday:

  • bragg’s apple cider vinegar & honey water
  • matcha tea
  • banana & greek yogurt
  • wasa multigrain crackers for snacking
  • giant organic salad
  • bragg’s apple cider vinegar & honey water
  • brussel sprouts, tomato & garbanzo bean salad for dinner
  • probiotic & enzyme supplements
  • 3 joe-joes < okay, okay, i know, i know!

today:

  • bragg’s apple cider & honey water
  • matcha tea
  • kale, strawberry, blueberry & vegan protein smoothie
  • giant salad for lunch
  • wasa cracker snacks
  • today, we get our CSA box, so i’ll juice some of the veggies and see what surprises/inspirations are inside
  • no more joe-joes left, so i don’t need to worry about that temptation…i heard frozen fruits make a yummy snack!

two #meatlessmonday recipes from @sproutedkitchen…

i haven’t been over to sara & hugh’s blog for quite some time, so was very excited to read that their cookbook is available for preorder at amazon.com! i can’t wait to get my hot little mitts on this one!

if your weather has been like ours, hot one day and freezing cold/windy the next, you might not know if a hearty salad or a warm bowl of soup is going to hit the spot. so, either one of these simple recipes should do the trick for your meatless monday or veggie any day…

first up, black bean and butternut soup!

our c.s.a. box has had some lovely squashes, carrots and cabbages, so i’m pretty excited to gussy this up (per sara’s suggestion) and make it more into a stew over quinoa or brown rice.

your weather a little warmer? then, what about a lovely wild rice salad with miso dressing?

since i have a pretty busy week ahead of me, i’m thinking i’ll go the big batch salad route and have this tasty meal ready and waiting for me!

#meatlessmonday recipe: pan roasted brussel sprouts and a new cookbook from @herbivoracious…

our c.s.a. box from underwood family farms has been a bounty of root vegetables, lettuces, cabbages and one of my favorites, brussel sprouts. since the irishman doesn’t like brussel sprouts, i’ve been searching for different ways to cook them for myself. yesterday, as i lay on the couch (the 2nd day of a brutal cold), giada de laurentiis made a light, bright salad by blanching the leaves and mixing them with arugula, endive and a simple vinaigrette (just lemon juice and olive oil). while that sounds very appealing, i am looking for something a little more hearty to get me through this funk…

as i do many sunday mornings, i look for my meatless monday inspiration on michael natkin’s awesome blog, herbivoracious. his recipe for pan roasted brussel sprouts with shiitakes and smoked paprika will definitely hit the spot! with just 7 ingredients (5 of which i already have) and a very simple preparation, i think i can muster the energy to make this meal tomorrow with a little brown rice on the side.

i’ve been a fan of michael’s blog for a long time and always found it interesting that a software developer at adobe was able to not only create such delicious recipes, but was an entertaining and informative writer and talented food photographer as well. so, i was quite excited to read (rather belatedly) that his new cookbook will be hitting the stands in may!

not only is he going on a book tour (i’ll be sure to attend), he’s going to quit his day job to pursue his passion full time…wowza! i think many of us have learned lessons from this downsized economy and are searching for different routes to happiness…like our farm fund…we want our lives to be more authentic and we’re willing to sacrifice comfort and what little security we have to get there.

#meatlessmonday recipe: miso sesame winter squash…

i got home last night and was in a cooking and roasting frenzy! the irishman and i have a hard time keeping up with our weekly c.s.a. delivery and since another bountiful box is coming tomorrow, there were still loads of veggies waiting for their debut in our fridge. i was roasting squash and broccoli and whipping up a black kale, bok choy and tatsoi stir fry to go over brown rice for dinner/lunch/dinner like a madwoman! so you could imagine my sorrow when searching for today’s meatless monday post, that i came across heidi’s recipe for miso sesame winter squash…suddenly my stir fry seemed so amateurish!

and considering the fact that this week’s box from underwood family farms contains the following:

1 bunch Candy Beets
1 bunch Yellow Carrots
1  Green Leaf Lettuce
1 pound Broccoli
1 Celery
1 Celery Root
1 bunch Italian Parsley
1 Colored Cauliflower
1 bunch Rainbow Chard
1/2 pound Brussel Sprouts
1 Green Cabbage
1 basket Blueberries
i’ll have to wait until the next time squash makes an appearance…although i am pretty darned excited about brussel sprouts & celery root!

i’ve said it a million times, i don’t eat meat and i don’t judge those who do. but it’s crucial that people know how their meat is raised. under what conditions. what it’s fed.

a few things you can do:

  • support farm sanctuary (whose mission is to “protect farm animals from cruelty, inspire change in the way society views and treats farm animals, and promote compassionate vegan living”)
  • check out whole foods market’s global animal partnership program – creating transparency in the meat industry and hopefully, encouraging other grocers to follow suit
  • sign this petition to raise awareness and help stop the brutality of factory farming

your spirit, your body, your children and your planet will thank you!

…and so will i!

#forksoverknives the worst film of 2011? what the kale?!?

back in may of 2011, roger ebert wrote a review of “forks over knives“. and while he felt the documentary was directed at physicians and focused a bit too much on nutrition (and not on exercise), he had no criticism of the message:

The bottom line: I am convinced this message is true. A plant-based whole foods diet is healthy. Animal protein is not necessary, or should be used sparingly as Asians did, as a flavoring and not a main course. This adds the advantage of allowing us to avoid the chemicals and carcinogens pumped into livestock and poultry. Fast food is lethal. Parents who feed it to their children are helping them get hooked on fat, salt and sugar addiction. The facts are in.

but somehow, by the end of the year, this life-changing documentary became the worst film of 2011 on his show, “ebert presents at the movies“.

forks over knives wasn’t meant to be entertaining. it wasn’t shot to go up against “transformers” or whatever else hollywood churns out for us to sit in a darkened theatre and shove popcorn and jujubees in our pie holes. it wasn’t glossy because it wasn’t glossing over the facts:  we are a sick nation. many of our ailments can be prevented/cured through a healthier diet. hell, even roger ebert changed the way he “eats” because of it:

P. S.: I have recently decided to ditch my canned nutrition and switch to a liquid diet based on fresh fruits and vegetables. Yes, I consulted my physician.

to name this film, of all films, as the worst of the year is insulting and a crime. countless lives have been changed/saved…and that is the power of filmmaking at its core.

i’m not a violent person, but after watching these two critics, i’d like to beet the crap out of them!

meatless monday recipe: avocado wasabi salad…

well, this one will have to be for little old me alone…the irishman doesn’t do avocados or wasabi…but this recipe looked too delicious to pass up! i don’t have much to say, it’s a salad. a lovely salad. a lovely salad with unique flavors. and i’m making it tonight for dinner.

i guess my lack of words could be due to the fact that this week, i conquered my fears and went for a spontaneous paraglide…say what? you heard me! little miss vertigo was flying high in the sky on tuesday. feet dangling over mountains. soaring up, up, up in the sky!

i had booked a surprise paraglide for the irishman’s birthday in june. we drove up to malibu, under the pretense of an awesome hike and a delicious mountaintop lunch (courtesy of the specialty department at whole foods). after about 45 minutes of wandering around in the blazing hot sun (i couldn’t find the rendezvous), we finally saw the guys – cliff ryder (yes, that’s his name) and his friend, steven. i went up asking about some super secret hiking trail. they said, they didn’t know the trail, but they did know it was tim’s birthday and they were his birthday present! it took him a moment to figure out what was going on. long story too long, we didn’t end up doing it that day, just hung out on the mountain with two amazing life-loving guys, eating cheese and olives and bread and having a splendid time.

fast forward a month later. it’s time for tim’s paraglide. we get out to malibu and they literally jump off the cliff. they fly low, over mountain ridges and soar up over a mountain and descend down to the sand. they land like little ballerinas in between sunbathers and beach goers. it is perfect. cliff takes us out for celebratory cocktails at duke’s and we try to figure out what to do next. cliff and tim are giddy from their ride. i’m a bit jealous, i must admit – but know that i cannot jump off like they did. cliff offers up kayaking and swimming (it’s an especially beautiful day in malibu). OR we could get in the car and drive to san bernardino/lake arrowhead and i could paraglide TODAY! gulp.

i decide to go for it! we drive for hours and end up at a beautiful berm. a rolling hill and perfect wind conditions. we run (i, rather awkwardly) and then, we are flying! gently, silently (minus my squeals), magically. it was amazing and life-changing.

we’re still waiting for videos from cliff, but if you live in l.a. and want to do something like this, we highly recommend cliff ryder! i’ll post the videos as soon as we get ’em…
